Course Classification and Prerequisites

Courses are classified by academic discipline and by level: introductory, intermediate and advanced.

Introductory courses introduce the student to the academic field. These courses do not require academic prerequisites, however some of the courses are based on prior knowledge, in most cases acquired in high school.

Intermediate courses focus on a specific topic. They are usually based on prior knowledge aquired in introductory courses (or parallel knowledge), and sometimes in other intermediate courses.

Advanced courses correspond to third year courses at other universities. These courses also include reading material in English. Therefore, only students who fulfilled the English requirements and the additional prerequisites specified for each course will be admitted to these courses. Some of the advanced courses are advanced seminars in which writing a seminar paper is one of the course requirements. In other courses the student must complete the course successfully and may decide whether or not to write a seminar paper.

The course descriptions in the Course Catalog occasionally specify that prior knowledge is "not required". In all cases the term "prior knowledge" refers to knowledge acquired in academic courses! This does not mean that you can successfully pass a mathematics course without knowing high school mathematics on a reasonably high level.
