55146 Methodology of Teaching Social Sciences

Prerequisites: Two of the following: Curriculum Design, Development, and Implementation, Education Theory, Psychology in Education, and a B.A. in the Social Sciences in two of three disciplines: Sociology, Political Science and Economics.1

The seminar acquaints students with methodical and pedagogical principles of teaching the Social Sciences with an emphasis on three areas: Sociology, Political Science and Economics.

Topics: General principles in teaching Social Sciences; Teaching goals; The methodology of Social Sciences and its significance in education; Value problems relating to Social Sciences and their teaching in learning and teaching processes; Principles in selecting teaching contents in Social Sciences – inclusion or separation, content levels, study topics, considerations and trends in selecting study topics; Teaching methods – traditional and modern methods, the motivational problem, knowledge structure of Social Sciences and of teaching; Textbooks, homework, examinations and tests; Review and analysis of research on teaching Social Sciences; Social Science curricula in Israel – types and levels.

The course also includes practical training in teaching Social Sciences (practicum). Students experience classroom teaching under the supervision of mentor teachers. Participation in tutorials is mandatory.
