55087 The Pleasures of Literature in the EFL Classroom

The course is based on a reader edited by Isabel Berman.

The course is intended for junior high and high school English teachers. It presents new approaches to literary interpretation and current terminology of literary criticism. It also examines literary works critically as well as the addition of the dimension of film or music and its impact on interpretation. It is composed of about nine online and five face-to-face meetings.

Topics: What is interpretation?; How do printed literature and film differ with regard to interpretation?; The short story, the novel and the autobiography/biography as written genre and as film; Poetry as written genre and as popular music (+ the visual effect of video); The relevance and universality of literature.

Structure: Self-study through weekly readings; Submitting assignments and receiving feedback via the Internet; Final project.
