20126 Computer Applications for the Sciences 1

Objectives: The course provides students with basic knowledge about the computer and computer applications and enables them to experience various components of computerized communication that will help them to participate in online courses in the future. It presents computer applications to aid students in courses and seminar papers, and in their professional lives.
Structure: The course has an online component that includes discussion groups and assignments downloaded from the site and submitted via e-mail or the online assignment system. The assignments require implementation of the software studied and include a final project that combines all the material studied in the course.
System requirements: PC with Hebrew support, Windows (Windows 98 and above); CD-ROM; sound card, modem, and an internet connection.
Topics: Introduction to the computer; Windows operating system; Microsoft Word – word processing; the Internet and its applications; Microsoft Excel electronic spreadsheets; Microsoft PowerPoint presentations.

There is overlap in the content of this course and Computer Applications for Social Sciences (10159). Taking this course grants an exemption from Computer Applications for Social Sciences. For details, see Overlapping Courses.
This course includes the topic “electronic spreadsheets” on a higher level than that studied in Computer Applications for the Humanities (10160). As a result, taking 10160 does not grant an exemption from this course.
Beginning in the 2012 Spring semester, a new course will replace this course. Among the changes in the content of the course, the new course will include training in Matlab software and will teach Office applications using Office 2010.
