10774 Creative Writing Workshop: Poetry II

Credits: 3 intermediate credits in Literature

Prerequisites: 21 credits in Literature, including Creative Writing Workshop: Poetry I

The question “what is a poem?” to which many answers have been given over the years, is examined in this workshop through poetry analysis and experiencing poetic writing.

Major aesthetic techniques in poetry, poetic structures and poetic styles are discussed and practiced through the writing of poetry in different styles and forms, as well as writing free poetry. The principals of rhyme and meter are studied, as well as creating figures, metaphors and metonyms in poetry. The materials include a collection of poems.

Group meetings are held every two weeks. Students are required to submit exercises during the semester, and to write a set of poems as a final assignment.
