10771 Creative Writing Workshop: Prose Fiction I 1

Credits: 3 intermediate credits in Literature

Prerequisites: 18 credits in Literature

Objective: To shift the emphasis from theoretical understanding of literary texts and the exposure of their aesthetic principles to implementation and construction of texts and short stories.

The workshop demonstrates aspects of the written text in order to develop students’ personal creative writing skills. It provides students with tools for constructing text, building a narrative (time, person, voice, character, point of view/focus, expression and form). Students are exposed to the textual dimension from different points of view while reading texts and practicing writing.

Students practice writing about situations, events, feelings, etc. These exercises are discussed in class and are accompanied by guided reading of relevant texts from Israeli and world literature.

Group meetings are held every two weeks. Students are required to submit exercises during the semester, and to write a short story as a final assignment.

1Enrollment is conditional upon a meeting with an academic advisor in Literature. The number of students in the workshop is limited.
