10580 Facility Layout and Associate Systems Design 1

Credits: 4 advanced credits in Industrial Engineering and Management

Prerequisites: Operations Management I. Students must also fulfill all English requirements and take bibliographic instruction in the Library.

Required: Deterministic Models in Operations Research

Recommended: Operations Management II, Simulation for Industrial Engineers

The course is based on Facilities Design (2nd ed.), by S.S. Heragu (iUniverse, 2006).

The course deals with basic concepts in the design and layout of facilities and industrial sites, handling systems, storage and warehouses. It presents the stages required in the layout planning process along with the quantitative models and various approaches available to the industrial engineer as well as the facility location problem and its various solution techniques.

Topics: Introduction to facility design and analysis of equipment and space requirements; Facility design data – definition, generation, presentation and analysis; Models for facilities layout; Algorithms for the layout problem; Group technology and cellular manufacturing systems; Materials handling; Storage and warehousing; Flexible manufacturing systems (FMS).

1Students may not write a seminar paper in the framework of this course.
