10570 Contemporary Sociological Theories 1

Credits: 6 advanced credits in Sociology and Anthropology

Prerequisites: 36 credits, including Introduction to Sociology and Classical Sociological Theories. Students must also fulfill all English requirements.

The course examines the main theoretical approaches in contemporary sociology. It presents a brief overview of the classic roots of modern sociological thought and an in-depth discussion of the major theoretical approaches that developed during the 20th century as well as the central theoretical questions that engaged, and continue to engage, sociology.

The theories discussed in the course include structural functionalism, symbolic interaction, neo-Marxist theories, exchange and network theories, ethnomethodology, feminist theories, as well as post-structuralist, post-colonial and post-modern theories.

The course is based on a translation of G. Ritzer, Modern Sociological Theory (5th edition), as well as a collection of articles and a study guide.
