10159 Computer Applications for Social Sciences 1

No credits

Prerequisites: none

The course provides students with basic knowledge about the computer and computer applications and enables them to experience various components of computerized communication that will help them to participate in online courses in the future. It presents computer applications useful in the Social Sciences to aid students in courses and seminar papers, and in their professional lives. The course also provides a general approach to computer applications that will enable students to cope with future versions of software studied in the course as well as with new software they encounter.

Structure: The course has an online component that includes discussion groups and assignments downloaded from the site and submitted via e-mail or the online assignment system. The assignments require implementation of the software studied and include a final project that combines all the material studied in the course.

System requirements: PC with Hebrew support, Windows (Windows 98 and above); CD-ROM; sound card, modem, and an internet connection.

Topics: Introduction to the computer, internet communication and informatics; Windows operating system; Microsoft Word – word processing; the Internet and its applications; Microsoft Excel electronic spreadsheets; Microsoft PowerPoint presentations.

1Students can take an exemption exam instead of taking the course. For details, see the Hebrew site.

This course includes the topic “electronic spreadsheets” on a higher level than that studied in Computer Applications for the Humanities (10160). As a result, taking 10160 does not grant an exemption from this course in those programs of study that require it. Because there is overlap in the content of this course and Computer Applications for the Sciences (20126), taking 20126 grants an exemption from this course. For details, see Overlapping Courses.

Beginning in the 2012 Spring semester, a new course will replace this course. In addition to changes in the content of the course, the new course will teach Office applications using Office 2010.
