10152 A Look at Opera 1

This telecourse is intended for opera lovers who cannot study full time and undertake a complete course. It includes five films on video, a small amount of written material from Opera (10411), and audio cassettes with musical examples. Each film relates to one opera or one topic and includes selections from famous opera productions, and selections from plays that served as the basis for some of the best-known operas.

Topics: “Cavalleria Rusticana” (Mascagni’s Rustic Chivalry); The birth of opera (about Monteverdi’s “Orfeo”); Opera as a social revolution (about Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro”); Opera and murder (about Verdi’s “Rigoletto”); The operatic ensemble (ensemble selections from Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro,” Verdi’s “Rigoletto” and Puccini’s “La Boheme”).

Students who successfully complete this course can get an additional 4 credits by taking the full course, Opera (10411).
