55465 Teaching Social Sciences: Methodology 1

Prerequisites: Two of the following: Curriculum Design, Development, and Implementation, Philosophy of Education,2 Educational Psychology; and a B.A. in Social Sciences, in two of three disciplines: Sociology, Political Science, Economics.

The course provides didactic tools for teaching Social Sciences in high school, with an emphasis on three fields: Sociology, Political Science and Economics.

Topics: General principles in teaching Social Sciences; The goals of teaching; The methodology of the Social Sciences and its significance in education; Value problems related to the Social Sciences and their instruction – in learning and teaching processes; Principles in selecting teaching contents in the Social Sciences – integration or separation, content levels, study topics, considerations and trends in selecting study topics; Teaching methods – traditional and modern methods, motivation problem, the knowledge structure of Social Sciences and teaching; Textbooks, homework, quizzes and exams; Review and analysis of research on teaching Social Sciences; Social Science curricula in Israel – types and levels.

Tutorial sessions are mandatory.


1No academic credits are awarded for this course, but it is equivalent to 6 semester hours.
