55201 Pedagogical Linguistics: From Theory to Practice

The course is based on a reader edited by Dr. Esther Klein-Wohl.

The course is intended for high school English teachers. It can be taken within the framework of courses required for obtaining a teaching license from the Ministry of Education,1 or for enrichment and development of teaching skills.2 The course is composed of about eleven online and three face-to-face meetings.

Topics: The course examines the pedagogical significance of different linguistic descriptions of the English language. It investigates the interrelationship between language and thought as reflected in the design features of human language, first and second language acquisition - similarities and differences; error analysis; vocabulary and grammar - the relationship between them; interactions among language users - comprehension and expression; language and society - the effect of cultural factors on language and implications for teaching.

Structure: Self-study through weekly readings; Submitting assignments and receiving feedback via the Internet; Discussion forum on the course website; Final project.


1Admission to studies toward a teaching license is dependent on terms specified in a letter of referral that teachers receive from the English Inspectorate at the Ministry of Education.

2For the course to be recognized for continuing education compensation [gmul bemaslul ishi], teachers need authorization in advance from the English Inspector in the district in which they work.
