The course is based on a Russian translation of The History of the Jews in the Land of Israel in the Mishnaic and Talmudic Period, by G. Alon; and on a reader that includes studies that expand on aspects of the period from differing points of view and were also translated into Russian.

The course deals with the history of the Jewish people from the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 AD to the days of Rabbi Judah the Patriarch and the writing of the Mishnah in approximately 220 AD.

Topics: Rebuilding the Jewish nation after the destruction under the leadership of Raban Johanan Ben Zakai and Rabban Gamliel of Yavne; The disengagement of Christianity from Judaism; Revolt of the Diaspora and the Kitos controversy; The Bar Kokhba revolt; Shift of the locus of Jewish settlement from Judea to the Galilee and contending with the consequences of the revolt; The period of Rabbi Judah the Patriarch.
