Credits: 3 advanced seminar credits in Chemistry

Prerequisites: 36 credits in the Sciences, including Chemistry in Action,1 and Organic Chemistry or Organic Chemistry for Biology Students. Students must also fulfill all English requirements and take bibliographic instruction in the Library.

The course is based on a reader edited by Joseph Epstein, Arie Ram and Nava Ben-Zvi.

In this course, students apply the knowledge and tools acquired in Chemistry in Action (20301) to the analysis of chemical processes in the chemical industry in Israel. The first part of the course presents several topics relevant to the chemical industry in Israel: extraction processes, the polymer industry, phosphorus industry, production of chemical fertilizers, sewage purification and water desalination. Students study at least one topic in depth.

In the second part of the course, with the guidance of a supervisor and after additional reading, students write a seminar paper on polymers pertaining to one aspect of industrial activity in Israel.
