10366 Brenner`s Early Novels 1

Credits: 3 advanced credits in Hebrew Literature

Prerequisites: 36 credits, including Hero and Anti-Hero in the Modern Novel or The Early 20th Century Hebrew Short Story. Students must also fulfill all English requirements.

Recommended: Poetics of Narrative Fiction; Basic Conventions of the 19th Century Novel.

The course offers a systematic, in-depth analysis of two of Brenner’s major novels: In Winter (1903), Circling the Dot (1904). The course focuses primarily upon interpretation and criticism, comparing earlier approaches with today’s literary research. The connection between Brenner’s works and the writings of Dostoyevsky and Nietzsche is also explored.


1Students may write a seminar paper within the framework of this course, although it is not required.
