10332 The Jews of Yemen 1

Credits: 3 advanced proseminar credits in Modern History of the Jewish People or in Middle Eastern Studies

Prerequisites: 24 credits, including Jews in an Era of Transition. Students must also fulfill all English requirements.

The course discusses the main characteristics of Yemeni society and of the Jewish community which lived in its midst, particularly during the 19th and 20th centuries. The course presents students with a case study of a traditional Jewish society in a Moslem country. Students will use archives, analyze documents and read scientific articles.

Topics: Part One: Yemen - the country and the Zeidi regime; The Zeidi sect and the Imam: the foundation of their attitude towards the Jews; Society and economy. Part Two: Students write a short pro-seminar paper based on analysis of sources, accounts of travelers, chronicles and archival material.


1Students may write a seminar paper within the framework of this course, although it is not required.
