10327 The Kingdoms of Israel and Judah

Credits: 6 advanced credits in Ancient History of the Jewish People

Prerequisites: 36 credits, including History of Israel during the First Temple Period, and one of the following: Classical Greece, The Archeology of Ancient Israel in the Biblical Period, History of Israel: From the Patriarchs to the Judges, From Exile to Independence, Jerusalem Throughout the Ages, or Historical Thinking: Issues in Philosophy of History. Students must also fulfill all English requirements and take bibliographic instruction in the Library.

History of Israel during the First Temple Period (10700) dealt with the important events of the period and the factors which shaped them. In this course, students deepen their knowledge in major aspects of internal policy and society, and of foreign policy. The course aims to develop the ability to read and analyze historical sources and professional literature; and to develop a critical approach, independent thought and the ability to explain and justify positions concerning issues discussed, in preparation for writing a seminar paper.

Topics: The institution of monarchy in Israel – its nature, source of authority, major characteristics and development; State organization in Israel – civil and military; The kingdoms of Israel and Judah and their relations with neighboring states; In the shadow of the empires – the foreign policy of Israel during the ascendancy of the Assyrian and Neo-Babylonian empires.
