Studies Toward Teaching Certificates

Teaching Certificate in Computer Science

This program grants a high school teaching certificate in Computer Science to students with an undergraduate degree in Computer Science. Applicants with a degree in a related field of study are required to take qualifying courses in Computer Science and/or Mathematics before beginning the program. An academic advisor for the teaching certificate in Computer Science will determine which courses each student needs to take (see Note 8 below).

The program includes academic courses (in Computer Science and Education) and field experience (practicum). Students must take no fewer than 18 credits (in addition to the credits required for the Bachelor's degree).

A Teaching Certificate in Computer Science will be awarded to students who have met the following requirements:

1. Successfully completed the following courses:

2. Successfully completed the requirements of Teaching Computer Science: Practical Training (Practicum) (55468): Every student must observe a number of classroom lessons and practice teach several lessons in a designated school. The student must also take Teaching Computer Science: Methodology (55467).

Notes:

1.

The program leads to a teaching certificate, not a teaching license. A teaching license in Computer Science is granted by the Ministry of Education in accordance with the criteria of the Ministry.

2.

Students who have taken one or more of the courses above in the framework of their undergraduate studies should consult an academic advisor in Computer Science to plan their program of studies.

3.

Every student must submit a request for approval of the program to the Study Programs Approval Committee, along with their original diploma and grade transcript no later than the completion date of the first course in the program. Student will be eligible for a Teaching Certificate in Computer Science following completion of their undergraduate studies and the Teaching Certificate program approved by the Committee.

4.

Students can only begin their field experience after the Committee has approved their program of study and following the approval of an academic advisor for the Teaching Certificate in Computer Science.

5.

Students who have not yet completed their undergraduate studies at the Open University may begin field experience only after accumulating at least 72 credits, and following approval of both the degree and the certificate programs of study by the Committee. The degree program must be approved before submitting the Teaching Certificate program.

6.

Students who have a BA from the Open University in Education (Curriculum & Instruction Studies) and Computer Science - Systems and Applications will be exempt from some of the courses above and the scope of their program of studies will be reduced.

7.

The detailed field experience program will be determined in coordination with the academic advisor for the teaching certificate in computer science. Practical training will be administered by a course coordinator who will assign each student to a teacher in a school.

8.

Qualifying courses in computer science may be chosen from among the undergraduate courses in Computer Science.
