Welcome to the Department of Literature, Language and the Arts. The department encompasses five disciplines: Literature (Hebrew and Comparative), Language, Music, Art History, and Film Studies. Literature offers a wide range of courses in Comparative and Hebrew Literature. A focused program in Literature is possible, though the B.A. degree awarded is in Humanities or in Humanities and Social Sciences. The focused program in Literature is offered in two forms: a more limited one (for all students, but especially suitable for those who have a teaching certificate but would like to teach at a higher grade than originally certified for) and an expanded one (for students considering a graduate degree in Literature). Both programs are structured and ensure that students take courses in both Hebrew and Comparative Literature and that they are exposed to different genres, periods and theory insofar as these are part of the course offering. Chart for students interested in Literature and Film Studies leading to a B.A. degree in Humanities or Humanities and Social Sciences. Language offers courses in Hebrew language and linguistics and in general language and linguistics. Recently developed courses uncover the relationship between linguistic and the area of communication. Music has several courses on offer, some of which address students well versed in music and music teachers; others are aimed at beginners. We are in the process of developing courses which will cover most of the genres and periods in the history of music. We have begun to convert some of the course materials to multimedia and in the near future will be offering a course in music and computers. Art History has various courses on offer. This area is currently being expanded to include multimedia materials as well. Film Studies is a relatively new area in our department, in which several courses are being developed. The Council for Higher Education approved an M.A. program in Cultural Studies, which will be offered in 2009. The program will include interdisciplinary courses and give expression to the mutual relationships among the different areas which constitute Cultural Studies. We will be glad to hear from you and to provide assistance in all matters related to studies in our department.
