English Language CoursesThe Open University offers a series of courses in English reading comprehension for academic purposes on five levels: A, B, C, D and E, plus a course for students whose English is below E level.
Level A - Advanced Level English
The A level course is an academic course offered in different academic fields: two courses in the Social Sciences (31015, 31011); one for students of Humanities (31010); and one for students of the Sciences (31001). One course, 31022, is open to students of all disciplines, and is offered only through distance education via the course website.
No credits are granted for these courses.
Levels B (61133), C (61134) - Intermediate level English
Levels D (61135), E (61136) - Beginning level English
Below E level (91428) - Bridging the Gap in English
The B-E level courses are preliminary courses which lead to the A level. "Bridging the Gap in English" is intended for students who have tested into the level based on an internal exam in the English Unit. It is preparatory to the level E course. Open University students enrolling in B- to E-level English courses who meet specific requirements may receive a 50% tuition discount.
A, B, and C level courses can be studied once a week in 14 tutorial sessions; D and E level courses are taught twice a week (25 tutorial sessions).
A, B, and C level courses can be studied twice a month (7-8 tutorial sessions).
During most semesters, A (31022), B, C and D level courses are offered through distance education via the course websites.
Synchronous Online courses
During most semesters, E level (61136) courses and Bridging the Gap in English (91428) are offered through distance education with virtual meetings online.
